Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women to Prioritize Looking into Online Violence against Women

Dubravka Šimonović, the new Special Rapporteur on violence against women, announced in her first report to the Human Rights Council in April 2016 that she would be looking further into the pressing issue of online violence against women as a new form of gender-based violence.

Ms. Šimonović acknowledged in her report that, “while the use of information and communications technology has contributed to the empowerment of women and girls, its use has also generated online violence.” Specifically, Ms. Šimonović pointed out the “need to examine this recent phenomenon, and the applicability of national laws to it, and to make recommendations for States and non-State actors to fight online violence against women and girls while respecting the freedom of expression and the prohibition of incitement to violence and hatred.”

The Due Diligence Project congratulates Ms. Šimonović on her appointment and her identification of online violence against women as an emerging issue that needs attention. The Due Diligence Project convened an expert group meeting on the role of the state and internet intermediaries in combatting online violence against women in October 2015. We continued this conversation with Ms. Šimonović at the 60th session of the Commission on the Status of Women in March 2016 with a panel on State accountability and next steps in addressing online violence against women. The Due Diligence Project offers its enthusiastic support to Ms. Šimonović in furthering her mission to understand and address online violence against women.
